The Marble Falls High School tennis team returned with several medals since the spring season began.

The Mustangs are working toward seedings for the District 24-4A tournament, which is March 26-27 at the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center on the Marble Falls High School campus.

Coaches take records from tournaments leading up to district to decide seedings.

Reigning boys singles district champion Cooper Womack is continuing his mastery on the court. In the last two tournaments at Copperas Cove and the Hutto-Taylor event, he has returned with two gold medals.

Head coach Sam Whitley had a simple explanation for Womack’s success.

“He just loves the sport,” he said. “He loves to compete. He’s a goal-centered kid, and he works.”

The boys double team of Collin Schilling and Riley Stence took first place in the Copperas Cove tournament and played for third place in the Taylor-Hutto tournament “but came up short,” the coach said.

What makes their partnership effective?

“They’re opposite players,” Whitley said. “Collin is very intense and Riley is not. It’s the ying and the yang. Their personalities balance out as a team.”

Marble Falls will compete in the Burnet tournament the weekend of Feb. 29-March 1 but will host some matches at the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center.

“These tournaments prepare you for the district tournament and who’s going to regionals and state,” Whitley said.
